About SKR
The Swedish Association of Women’s Shelters and Young Women’s Empowerment Centres, SKR
The Swedish Association of Women’s Shelters and Young Women’s Empowerment Centres, SKR, is a national association of women’s shelters, young women’s centres, relatives’ associations and other organisations that seek to prevent men’s violence against women. The association is politically and religiously independent. SKR wants to create the right conditions for equality and the liberation of women in all parts of society.
High-priority groups
SKR works on several levels to prevent all kinds of violence: physical, psychological, sexual and economic. SKR prioritises its work to raise awareness of the situations of children and various groups of women and their particular needs. In particular, SKR seeks to raise awareness of the vulnerability of the following groups, and their need for help and support:
- Children who live with violence as part of their everyday lives.
- Teenage girls who are beaten, threatened or sexually abused.
- Women of a minority background, who have only been in Sweden a short time and who do not have a social network and are vulnerable to violence
- Women exposed to honour violence and threats
- Lesbian women, exposed to violence from their partners.
- Women who are addicted to drugs and vulnerable to violence
- Older women who are exposed to violence. Only a handful of them try to find help and support.
- Women with physical or mental disabilities, who are exposed to violence by their relatives and/or carers.
